Cecile Gibbs Gee, first lady of East Texas State Teachers College, and later East Texas State University, from 1947-1966, purchased this tiara to be used annually at homecoming to crown the college’s homecoming queen. The tiara was used from 1959 until 1994 when it was placed on display in the Heritage House.
Mrs. Gee (1898-1994), originally from Huntsville, Texas, was known in the community for her adherence to Southern traditions such as her belief in a high standard of dress and social propriety. She was rarely seen in public with her head uncovered, favoring large hats and bonnets.
Inscribed inside the crown:
May Youth’s Sweet Springtime
Make Magic Memories
For Life’s Lengthening Shadows
